It's a good first line tester, but you want better for real certification I think. It was under $250 when we got it, maybe it was on sale, because I'm seeing it now at $400+. Decent TDR, some fun inductive tester ringtones, etc. I've got good thumbs for that though.įluke makes (or made? ) a cheaper cable tester that still does some semblance of testing beyond the five buck blinkys. Replaceable die heads let you change 'em out when they wear out.Īs for stripping, one of the dedicated spinners always works better for me than a swiss army knife or something, but I eyeball it and size it using my thumbs as a guide for depth and it works great. In terms of tools though, the AMP crimper is one of the more expensive, but also I find the most consistent. They have a fancy little puck the jacks snap into for punchdown that help a lot, they're of uniform quality, and the associated accessories assemble into pretty good stuff when it's all done. If given my druthers, I only ever use Leviton jacks and plugs. I find consistency is very much a function of two things… Practice, and GOOD TOOLS AND MATERIALS. One DB60 to DB60 Back to Back Serial Cable Two 2610XM 12.4 128/32 FastEthernet Routers (can be upgraded) Look here for good, cheap gear if you do not already know about them. Much easier to deal with real equipment that you have access to. You are going about it the right way instead of using the sims or renting rack space. Been making little 1.5 Tito 2 foot cables t practice with.

Plus I have my little cisco lab at home with 2 switches and 2 routers within a foot of each other and don't want 7 feet of cable all over the place. No it's not on the test, just remember that crap from my Net+. People that just study for the test suck. Never hurts to go above and beyond the test. Maybe not the exam, but probably any job that requires a CCNA. taking the CCNA next Thursda圜CNA requires you to make cables? thus the confusion.ĥ68A/568B is, of course, for twisted pair - I think we were just commenting on the initial confusion from the title.

RG 58 (and other coax cable) is equally tricky (IME) and is more expensive if you screw it up. The title of the thread is ".R G 45." and there's discussion of reusing heads. Or did I miss something on these last 2 posts? Ummmm, he's using RJ45s to make cables that adhere to 568B specs. Thought the same damn thing, was scratching my head on that one. If you don't use them already, a really sharp set of cable shears is the best for stripping cable sheaths and cutting super-straight lines to fit perfectly into those connectors. I can still make 'em that look like they came out of a machine but I long ago realized that it's cheaper in most cases to just buy the cables from monoprice. Buy a few hundred - you'll get good at it eventually. You mean R J45! I thought you were going for RG-58. It's funny, I have both ends wired to 568B and it still doesn’t like to always work Note: The arrows indicate signal direction:ġAny pin not referenced is not connected. So when a cable I make doesn’t work, i don’t waste the head. The table below shows the X.21 DTE cable pinouts (DB-60 to DB-15).

This cable has a male DB-60 connector on the Cisco end and a male DB-15 connector on the network end.

The CAB-X21MT serial cable is used in the Cisco 7000 family, Cisco 4000 series, Cisco 3600 series, Cisco 2500 series, Cisco 1600 series, Cisco access servers, and AccessPro PC cards. Note: The cable itself identifies the Cisco router as a DTE or DCE device to other devices in the network for this reason, it is important to select the correct product number from the table below. The cable gender for the CAB-X21MT serial cable (part number 72-0789-01) is Male DB-60 to Male DB-15, mode - DTE.
